Training Philosophy

Dusty Wessels and his West38Moto crew are known for turning complex off-road riding concepts into practical, repeatable skills riders can rely on for a lifetime. The coaching style is energetic and methodical, rooted in GRIT’s core values—no ego, no shortcuts, just solid fundamentals taught the right way. Whether you’re brand new to adventure riding or an experienced rider refining technique, this program is built to develop confidence, reinforce correct habits, and improve control across real-world terrain.

Choose Your Training Level

Dusty’s Beginner and Intermediate courses are often held at the same location and on the same weekend—but they are not the same class. Riders are divided into separate groups so the coaching, drills, terrain, and pace match their current ability.

-- Beginner Training --

Built for riders who are new to off-road riding—or who want to replace guesswork with strong, repeatable fundamentals.

The Beginner course focuses on balance, body position, slow-speed control, and Dusty’s “Triple Threat”: using the clutch, brake, and throttle together. You’ll learn how to transition from pavement to dirt with greater control and significantly more confidence.

This course is right for you if:

  • You’re new to riding an adventure bike off pavement
  • Loose surfaces still make you tense
  • You struggle with slow-speed control or tight turns
  • You want to build the right habits from the beginning

-- Intermediate Training --

Built for riders who already understand the fundamentals and are ready to apply them with greater precision across more challenging terrain.

The Intermediate course strengthens clutch, brake, throttle, body position, momentum control, and terrain management. Drills become more dynamic, and riders learn to maintain control when traction, elevation, or trail conditions change.

This course is right for you if:

  • You’re comfortable riding basic dirt and gravel roads
  • You can stand and operate the controls with confidence
  • You want better control through hills, turns, obstacles, and loose terrain
  • You’re preparing for more technical trails, tours, or BDR-style riding

Train With W38M Across the Country

Dusty & the crew bring the same practical, confidence-building instruction to several distinctly different training environments. The curriculum stays consistent, but each location offers its own terrain, conditions, and overall experience.

-- Cloudcroft, New Mexico --

High-country mountain training. Cloudcroft brings Dusty’s training into a cooler, higher-elevation mountain environment. Riders build their skills in varied terrain that feels closer to the conditions they may encounter on western backroads and adventure routes.

Beginner and Intermediate tracks are offered separately, allowing newer riders to establish their foundation while experienced riders work on control and adaptability in more demanding terrain. New Mexico training details

Best for: Riders who want a mountain setting and skills that translate directly to real-world adventure riding.

-- Penmerryl Farm, Virginia --

Rolling terrain with everything in one place. Penmerryl Farm offers training fields, private trails, onsite lodging, camping, bathrooms, and showers—all surrounded by the rolling mountain terrain of Virginia. Its contained setting makes it easy to move from controlled drills into practical terrain without leaving the property. Penmerryl Farm training details

Best for: East Coast riders who want a relaxed, immersive training weekend with lodging and riding onsite.

-- Borrego Springs, California --

Wide-open Southern California desert. Borrego Springs offers open desert terrain, loose surfaces, and dry conditions that reward smooth inputs and smart momentum management. The expansive landscape provides an ideal setting for building confidence while learning how an adventure bike responds when traction changes. California training details

Best for: Riders who want to become more comfortable with desert riding, loose terrain, and wide-open spaces.

-- Florence, Arizona --

Three-day immersive desert training. Florence is W38M’s extended-format training experience. Instead of packing everything into a standard weekend, riders get three days to learn, practice, reinforce, and apply their skills in rugged Arizona desert terrain. Arizona training details

Best for: Riders who want additional coaching time and a deeper progression from drills into real terrain.

-- The FARM — Parker, Colorado --

Purpose-built ADV training facility. The FARM provides a dedicated adventure motorcycle training environment where Beginner and Intermediate groups train concurrently on terrain matched to their ability. Camping is available onsite, with bathrooms, showers, drinking water, and nearby lodging options. Colorado training details

Best for: Riders who want a focused training facility, a community-style weekend, and easy access from the Denver area.
